Macau, China, May 29, 2019 – Despite losing in straight sets today, Belgium coach Gert Vande Broek remains upbeat after seeing his team’s effort against the reigning Olympic champions China.

China coach Lang Ping said: “We value this match greatly because Belgium have made significant progress in recent years and are now one of the strongest teams in Europe. We placed huge emphasis on our blocking today, and I realized that we still need to make improvements on our reception and tactical adjustments when Belgium team’s serves put us under much pressure in the second set. I hope my team will continue to raise its standards for tomorrow’s match.”

China captain Zhu Ting said: “Belgium are a strong team so I am glad we won the match today. We now concentrate on the next match and will do our best to play a good game tomorrow.”

Belgium coach Gert Vande Broek said: “The China team are very strong, both physically and technically, and the players are really organized. I enjoy watching them play but it is not pleasant to play against them. My players did the best they could, kept looking for solutions during the match but it was so difficult to score against such a quality team. Nevertheless, I am pleased that we kept fighting. Overall we had a better day than yesterday, and I cannot be disappointed with our efforts.”

Belgium captain Ilka Van De Vyver said: “It was an honour to play against the Olympic champions today. We tried to have more fighting spirit and do better today and I think we have made some progress in this regard. Our only chance today was to put pressure on their serves to make it a slightly more even contest, but China were simply too strong.”
