Apeldoorn, Netherlands, May 28, 2019 – Poland defeated Bulgaria in four sets on the first day of week 2 of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League in Apeldoorn on Tuesday.

Poland’s leading scorer Malwina Smarzek: “I am really happy and proud of my team. We made a lot of easy mistakes in the first sets, we played with too much pressure. But after that we started to play better. Last year I scored 38 points in a match, today 41, that’s a new record for me. Too bad it wasn’t a tiebreak, then I could have scored even more – haha! Kidding aside, I’m an opposite and scoring points is my job. I’m very proud of my team’s performance today. In this year our target is to stay in the VNL. But now that we are performing so well, with three wins in four matches, we might start to think about more.”

Ivan Petkov, Bulgaria coach: “I think we started very, very good in the first and second set. But in the second set we made four simple mistakes and then we gave it away. We have a very young team with a bright future, but we need more time to win matches like this.”
