Ekaterinburg, Russia, June 18, 2019 – USA defeated Russia in three sets in the second match in Ekaterinburg on Tuesday.
Russia head coach Vadim Pankov said: “Unfortunately, we only fought one and a half sets. We had to win the first two sets and then, perhaps, we would have played differently.”
Russia player Tatiana Romanova said: “In two sets, we led but did not believe in ourselves. We made a lot of mistakes, could not get together at the right moment. Our own mistakes prevented us from developing our advantage. The USA team is a very well-coordinated team. They were very disciplined, they knew how to defend themselves against us.”
USA captain Jordan Larsen said: “I would not say that the victory over the Russian national team was easy. It was a tough match. It was necessary to work hard to win today. I would also note the atmosphere within our team, the way the players in the reserve get on with each other and with those on the court. The task of our team is to play better and better with each match. The VNL is a very long tournament, during which we need to improve our game in order to take first place in the end.”
USA head coach Karch Kiraly said: “We respect the Russian national team as an opponent, the way they fought today. The match was extremely difficult. At the same time, both teams did not show good volleyball today. I am very pleased that with this quality of the game we won the first set. The atmosphere at the match was wonderful! It’s cool when the arena is full and the stands are so passionately supporting their team.”
